Russian government donates shs 11.2 billion to Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture to boost their effort in the fight against desert locusts.

The Russian government has donated shs 11.2 billion to the government of Uganda to boost their efforts in the fight against desert locusts that invaded the country this year.

The Russian Ambassador to Uganda, Alexander Polyakov handed over the donation to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries through a function held at the headquarters of the Ministry in Entebbe on Monday.

“It is my great pleasure and honour to address this emblematic nut important handover of 3 million dollars cheque for the contribution to Uganda made by the Russian Federation through the UN Food and Agriculture Organization,” the Ambassador said.

“During these difficult times amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, this donation came at a critical moment to balance up efforts of Uganda government’s in the fight against desert locusts,” Polyakov the Russian ambassador to Uganda said.

Polyakov said the donation will be used in the fueling of vehicles, purchasing of pesticides, buying of sprayers as well as training and employing personnel in the fight against the desert locusts.

The ambassador said that it’s not the first time the Russian government is helping the Ugandan government. Last year the Russian government donated 53 vehicles to assist its Kampala based regional logistics.

“This is not the first time my government is helping Uganda. Last year, the Russian government in addition to 218 Kamaz trucks to UN Food program in 2015 also donated another 53 vehicles to assist its Kampala based regional logistics hub,” the Ambassador said.

The Russian envoy said that the Russian government will do whatever it can to strengthen the cooperation between Uganda and Russia.

“It’s my strong belief that the government of Uganda in cooperation with the UN and with the support from Russia will be able to put an end to this scourge and help the affected communities to get back on their feet,” the Russian ambassador added.

The Agriculture Minister Ssempijja commended the Russian government for their openhanded support towards fighting desert locusts and ensuring food security in the country.

“This hold-up, for which we are genuinely thankful, is to respond to the present predictions as the country braces for more desert locusts’ attack, your support in this area is certainly appropriate,” Ssempijja said.

Ssempijja asked for more support from the Russian government in terms of transportation and manpower support, pumps containers and another safe disposal.

“Following considerations of various problems we experience in the field, I propose that you consider the following areas of support: five-cabin pickups for transport and operational field office at Soroti Flying School, motorcycles and desert locust surveillance equipment for the district teams,” the Minister said.
