SC Villa cemented their position in UPL after edging Express FC in Kampala derby, Coach Semwogerere set to face the axe

SC Villa cemented their position as league leaders of the 2019/20 Uganda Premier League after a narrow 1-0 victory over eternal rivals Express FC at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku on Friday 13th September.

Beginning the season in full gear, SC Villa continued again with an emphatic start to the season, after yet another morale-boosting derby victory over fierce rivals.

Being the two teams most supported the club’s in Ugandan football, the turn up didn’t disappoint either as both sets of fans turned up in huge numbers to support their boys.

A lonely strike from Ambrose Kirya separated the two sides at the end of 90 minutes of the game.

Dominating most of the possession, Villa finally got their breakthrough to pick up maximum points against a defensively compacted side in Express.

Frank Kalanda had a chance to put Express FC ahead in the first minutes of the game but his shot was harmless to Joogo goalie, Saidi Keni.

Villa also got a chance, five minutes later but Emmanuel Kalyowa’s shot from Bashir Mutanda’s pass went over the bar.

Frank Ssenyondo for Express was substituted due to an Injury 30 minutes on the clock after a collision with Keni as the former was through on goal.

The hosts came close Gin in the 40th minute, but Andrew Kiwanuka’s shot was again well saved by Keni.

Despite Express having limited time on the ball, Express continued to create openings and in the 67th minute, substitute Doka Mweru could only find the side net.

Ambrose Kirya for Villa rose highest to nod home the only goal of the game in the 70th minute. Derrick Ndahiro’s cross was miscalculated by Express FC keeper Joshua Adea and was caught out by Kirya’s header.

Kirya could have added a second, three minutes later, brilliantly controlling Charles Lwanga’s low cross, but his shot was too weak to beat Adea. Lwanga also came close to add a second, but his shot from close range missed the target by inches.

The win now means that SC Villa is on top of the 2019/2020 Star Times Uganda Premier League table with 10 points from the five games.

Meanwhile, for Express, the loss pushes them to 12th position with only four points in five games and also a single win against Mbarara city.

What does it mean to Coach Semwogerere

With only one win in the 2019/2020 Uganda Premier League club, coach George Semwogerere will need to pull up his socks or prepare to face the sack.

Speculations around the club are already indicating that the club is prepared to part ways with him in case the results do not change.

Semwogerere was appointed as the team’s head coach in February this year replacing Kefa Kisala who left the club on mutual consent.
