Bobi Wine arrested by Uganda Police as he turned up to launch his consultative meetings ahead of 2021

Police have arrested the People Power leader also the Kyadondo East legislator, Robert Kyagulanyi stage name Bobi Wine as he tried to kick off his nationwide consultative meetings ahead of the 2021 general elections.

Bobi Wine who intends to contest for the presidency against the incumbent in the nearing general elections was today Monday 6th, January 2020 meant to launch his nationwide consultative meetings in his Constituency, Kyadondo East at Our Lady of Good Counsel Secondary School Gayaza and then head to the Northern part of the country on Tuesday.

Starting with Gulu District, Lira, Adjumani, Yumbe, Arua and Zombo which make up the seven Districts in the country he intends to begin his presidential consultative meetings with.

Bobi Wine’s arrest came after Police blocked people from accessing the venue, fired teargas and live bullets to disorganise his first consultative meeting at his home constituency.

Bobi Wine has been arrested along with other People Power leaders and detained at Kasangati Police Station in Wakiso District.

In this phase one consultative meetings, Bobi Wine had planned to create awareness and inform the electorate about his manifesto before 2021 general elections.

Following the event, Tony Sempebwa Kiyimba, the Kasangati Mayor said he’s very much disappointed that Police went ahead to disrupt a legal meeting like this one.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that they received the letter and they will go through it today to check whether Bobi Wine followed the right steps as requested by Police under the Public Order Management Act provision (POMA).

“He is supposed to notify the area LC1, Police and the authorities then when the meeting is taking place we go and access whether the requirements are in place,” Enanga said.

Bobi Wine in a statement released on Friday said that they as People Power intend to reach all corners of Uganda, and hoped that security agencies will not seek to interfere with their activities.

He adds that People Power Movement is obedient to the extent that they bow down to laws they don’t agree with. For instance, the Public Order Management Act, and so far they have at least handled everything.

Continuing, Bobi Wine said that his presidential consultative meetings are in line with Section 3 of the Presidential Elections Act. 2005, and all relevant authorities have been notified about their planned meetings.

“Section 3 of the Presidential Elections Act provides that anyone who aspires to become president can write to the EC and thereafter go around the country consulting citizens about his or her intentions,” Bobi Wine said in his Friday message.

“So, in light of this, I am going to interact with Ugandans about my intentions to run for Presidency,” he added.

Section 3 of the Presidential Elections Act 2005 (1), (2) and (3) states that:

“An aspirant may consult in preparation for his or her nomination as a presidential candidate within 12 months before the nomination date. While consulting, a presidential aspirant may carry out nationwide consultations, prepare his or her manifesto and other campaign materials,
