Jinja Nile Bridge in Jinja district went to a standstill yesterday when a Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) soldier shot his senior colleague dead for uncertain reasons.
Sgt Peter Ouma was shot dead at the bridge on Tuesday by his fellow soldier Pte Jonan Katushabe at 2:00pm, and his body dropped into the waters of the river Nile.
After killing his colleague, Katushabe placed his colleagues at gun point and dragged them away as an alternative to escape this tragic moment.
Soon after the incident, the entire bridge section was sent and enclosed by a portion of armed troops from Jinja Army command and Mamba Personnel Carrier.
As activities proceeded, motorists and pedestrians were blocked from accessing the area for about 30 minutes.
After learning heavy deployment in the area, Katushabe began firing bullets to find his way out, but all efforts failed. He was captured and taken under a gun point.
Eye witnesses say, Katushabe a marine brigade and Ouma had an argument before the shooting.Ouma’s body was then picked from the river and taken to Jinja Hospital Mortuary.
Captain George Musinguzi, spokesman for the Jinja Army, condemned the actions of Katushabe and pledged to carry out investigations to establish the cause of the issue.
We shall investigate the matter to understand his reason for committing such a grave act. However, we as the UPDF, this is not our means of operation and we condemn it.
