DP bloc will help us fumigate cockroaches and snakes from the party, says Norbert Mao

A move to recruit new members into the Democratic Party (DP) bloc, a coalition comprised of different political parties to be unveiled soon.

Norbert Mao, DP president says the purpose of this exercise is to “fumigate cockroaches and snakes from the party.”

He also said that the registration process is to be done in every district of Uganda, starting with Kampala where the party offices are situated.

“We are going to roll out from the branch level, the massive registration of new members of the party. The purpose of this exercise under the office of the organising secretary is to create a member’s register with only DP believers,” said Mao.

As the 2021 general elections draw closer, DP formed a special relationship earlier with the People’s Development party headed by Dr Abed Bwanika and Social Development party headed Micheal Mabikke.

Since then, the bloc filed accusations’ against Dr Kizza Besigye, the former presidential candidate and the leader of People’s Government for holding onto opposition leadership.

DP bloc is also seen disassociating its self with any party that closely work with Dr Besigye, particularly Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

And cooperating with other parties which have a distant relationship with Besigye, and these include; People Power led by Robert Kyagulanyi is commonly known as Bobi Wine, Jeema led by Asuman Basalirwa and Alliance for National Transformation party led by former FDC president, Mugisha Muntu.

DP party has been characterised by division among members under Mao’s leadership, particularly lord mayor Elias Lukwago who is a DP member but doesn’t participate in any DP activity.

First Lukwago refused to attend a delegates’ conference held in Mbale District that propelled Mao into office. According to Lukwago, the meeting was unlawfully held and since then, he has never actively participated in any party activity.

Despite calling himself a life member of DP, Lukwago was elected two times as the Kampala City lord mayor but on an independent card.

Nevertheless, he’s actively participating in Besigye’s newly formed political group, the People’s Government. People’s Government was formed following claims by Besigye that president Museveni stole his vote in the 2016 presidential election.

In this, Besigye says president Museveni is a junta and he’s is the rightful leader of this country.

Another hater of Mao’s administration is Betty Nambooze, the Mukono Municipality legislator, who is a great critic of Mao as regards to DP business.

Speaking about those who hate his leadership, Mao says whoever doesn’t agree with his leadership he/she should vacate DP and find elsewhere they feel pleasant.

“We have some people in our DP boat who are supposed to be rowing but instead they are busy rocking the boat. We think those people should find a different boat where they feel comfortable,” Mao said.
