President Museveni sends off 8,000 girls under the Presidential Initiative of Skilling the Girl Child at a graduation ceremony held at Kololo Air Strip
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni yesterday encouraged graduates to go out there and utilised the skills they have attained under the Presidential Initiative of Skilling the Girl Child, to produce Ugandan made products to eliminate importation of Chinese sub-standard goods which have dominated Ugandan market.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Presidential Initiative of skilling the girl child held at Kololo Air Strip on Sunday, President Museveni stated that the project aims to reduce on the importation, stop sending our money abroad and boost local production of goods to improve on Uganda’s trade deficit.
President Museveni referred Africa to a woman suffering from constant blood flow! Where Blood flows constantly until she dies, which implies that our money is flowing abroad through the purchase of imported products which Ugandan can produce.
In the message, he says that we have the resources, but we don’t know how to utilise them and instead source finished products abroad.
He adds that many Ugandans work in Japan and UAE, but when they come back home, they again send the money back to those countries through buying their made products like; cars, chairs among others something which must stop, because this skilling programme is here to boost locally made goods and trade.
“Labour is exported! You go for work abroad, and again you send the money back to them. Japanese sell you their cars here, and take back the money you’ve earned from their country where you work from,” President Museveni said.
Additionally, Museveni said that Ugandans are stupid because we live in the forests and allow people living in the desert to sell chairs to us.
“In Dubai where you go for work they sell seats here, those in the desert make chairs, and we in the forest we buy seats from those living in the desert. Don’t you see the stupidity there?” Museveni said.
The Presidential Initiative of skilling the girl child started in 2017 under president Museveni’s directions purposely to empower underprivileged girls with basic skills in tailoring, knitting, weaving, shoemaking, hairdressing, bakery among others to reduce unemployment levels in the country.
Now with the addition of over 8,000 girls who graduated yesterday, the total number of girls who have benefited from the project has risen to over 100,000 girls since the project began in 2017.
In this project, girls receive a six months training in any skill of their interest and afterwards a certificate of education awarded in addition to 100,000 Shillings start-up capital.
As a way of saying thank you to the president for facilitating their skilling programmes, the girls came along with their produced work for the president to see and also offered prayers to the president to see victory in the coming presidential elections.
Amidst excitement and joy of parents and their daughters, the Minister for Kampala, Betty Olive Namisango Kamya thanked the president for offering help to the needy Ugandan girls, by offsetting the burden of paying fees from their parents.
However, Kamya assured president Museveni 85% victory come to 2021 General Elections because of his initiative of coming on the ground to witness what exactly happens.
Kamya says the project started as a joke with many despising it, but today it has picked up and this alone represents a total victory for the president come 2021 presidential ballot.
Lucy Nakyobe Mbonye, the State House Controller, advised the girls to go ahead and utilise the skills they have attained, go work and make money. Because if they go and sit back, it will be wastage of money.
