As DP’s Norbert Mao switched to the ruling National Resistance Movement party, political activist Rt Col Dr Kizza Besigye congratulated him, saying he was unclear which side he stood on.

DP’s Norbert Mao has been congratulated by political activist Rt Col Kizza Besigye after switching to the National Resistance Movement party (NRM). Besigye said he was confused about which side he belonged to before switching.

“I think that Hon Mao needs to be “ congratulated” for ARRIVING after “a long journey” and for the “unprecedented step” taken- using his own words! Hon Baryomunsi now has good company.

The struggle to end Junta (gun) rule continues &will intensify as the arena becomes clearer,” Besigye said. Other opposition colleagues including Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago also posted “Kitalo nyo!!. Born 1954 and ….”

Their submissions came shortly after the Democratic Party Chairman was appointed Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs by President Yoweri Museveni in a letter signed on July 21st.

“By virtue of the authority conferred on the president by Articles 113(1) and 114(1) of the constitution of the Republic of Uganda, I hereby appoint persons below as Cabinet Ministers and Ministers of State,” Museveni said in a signed document making rounds on social media.

His appointment came after he on Wednesday met with President Museveni and inked a deal to work together.

Speaking about the meeting, Mao commended the President for being a cooperative leader. He said he is determined to even entice his party colleagues into loving the relationship.

“You must look for them wherever they are in all the political parties and in all the corners of Uganda. This is a living document. It has to continue growing and we have signed it in a good faith,” Mao said.

On his side, Museveni said the signed agreement was aimed to build cooperation between the two parties. He said despite being on the opposition end, DP continues to stand out. He said the party also flows in his veins.

“I met with Democratic Party President Norbert Mao at State House Entebbe. We signed a cooperation agreement between the NRM and the DP. I salute the DP leadership for this gesture of mature, foresighted and constructive politics,” Museveni said.

“Although DP has been in the opposition, they have not been destructive. They criticise but are not destructive. You know the history. I keep telling you that DP without Museveni is not a serious group because I was a very active member of DP,” he added.
